When the story of a 10-year-aged rape victim crossing state strains for an abortion drew popular notice before this month, some Republican politicians and news outlets dismissed it as a hoax.
In a now-deleted tweet, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan wrote: “A different lie. The tale in the beginning drew skepticism since of a deficiency of aspects produced to the community. But when an Ohio guy, Gershon Fuentes, was arrested Tuesday right after law enforcement reported he confessed to the rape, some Republican policymakers attempted as a substitute to shift the focus onto immigration.
Some Republican politicians are hoping to reframe the tale all around illegal immigration
Jordan, along with some other Congressional Republicans who oppose abortion rights, zeroed in on Fuentes’ purported status as an undocumented immigrant.
“We did not know that an unlawful alien did this heinous act. We in no way doubted the boy or girl,” Jordan told NBC News.
Jordan blamed the media, indicating the lie was “the information headline … the headline from your career. We doubted Joe Biden, which is generally a clever detail to do, but we didn’t know that this illegal immigrant experienced carried out this horrible factor. He ought to be prosecuted to the whole extent of the law.”
Texas Rep. Roger Williams also attempted to center the discussion all-around immigration, telling NBC News, “Where’s the conversation about an illegal human being doing this? How do you protect this? How do you defend this male who came around illegally, and we have acquired 5 million of them more than in this article?”
Fox News hosts, including Tucker Carlson, Jesse Watters, and Laura Ingraham, also failed to suitable their prior reporting on the tale, which referred to as it a “hoax” and “politically timed disinformation.”
Instead, soon after the information of Fuentes’ arrest broke, Carlson and Ingraham’s shows stated the 10-year-old woman “in Biden’s abortion story” was raped by an “illegal immigrant.”
“So the apparent headline below was not about abortion. It was about the crime fully commited towards a baby — ‘Who raped a 10-calendar year-outdated?’ ” Carlson explained. “Seemingly, the rapist was an illegal alien.”
When contacted for remark, a FOX Information spokesperson pointed to several reports corroborating the tale and on the arrest. Whilst Carlson and Ingraham did not handle their past reporting, other FOX News correspondents have covered developments on the tale.
